The Stations of the Cross are the oldest walking prayer of the Western Church, the road from the judgment hall to the tomb, prayed at fourteen images in every Catholic church on earth, on every Friday of Lent and in many seasons besides.

The Way of Sorrows sets the two great forms of that road side by side. The Traditional Way of the Cross is the version composed in the 1750s by Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori, bishop, Doctor of the Church, and the soul who more than any other gave the Catholic laity the prayers by which they have walked beside Christ in His Passion for nearly three centuries. The Scriptural Way of the Cross is drawn straight from the four Gospels in the Douay-Rheims English, each station closing with an original meditative prayer. The reader walks the road twice, once with Liguori, once with only the words of the inspired Scripture, and finds that both ways end at the same Cross.

At every station stands one of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's etchings of 1748, made for the Church of San Polo in Venice. At the back are gathered the three great hymns of the Passion the Church has placed beside the Stations for centuries, the Vexilla Regis, the Stabat Mater, and the Anima Christi, in their traditional Latin and in English.
