About this edition

Saint Gregory the Great (c. 540–604), monk, then Pope, and Doctor of the Church, wrote the Dialogues about the year 593, at the asking of his deacon Peter, who longed to hear of the holy men of his own land. In four books Gregory answers him.

The first and third books recount the miracles of the fathers of Italy; the second is given wholly to the life of Saint Benedict, the father of Western monasticism, and remains its earliest and chief source; the fourth turns to the soul, its immortality, and the state of the departed, and did much to shape the Church's teaching on prayer for the dead. The whole is cast as a conversation between Gregory and Peter, who questions, wonders, and asks for more.

This Sanctified Souls Press edition gives the text complete in the historic English translation made in 1608 and re-edited by Edmund G. Gardner in 1911, which is in the public domain; its grave and tender older cadence is printed here unaltered. Newly set on cream paper, for reading and keeping.
