About this edition
The Summa Contra Gentiles is the second of Saint Thomas Aquinas's two great Summae, written about the year 1259, by tradition a manual for the missions, to commend the Christian faith to those who did not accept its scriptures.
Where no common scripture can be appealed to, Aquinas argues from natural reason alone, turning to the mysteries of faith only at the last. It moves in four books: God, creation, providence, and salvation.
This Sanctified Souls Press edition presents it in the English of Joseph Rickaby, S.J., Of God and His Creatures, 1905, in two volumes on cream paper. Rickaby's is a free and lightly condensed rendering of the four books; his scholarly footnotes are set aside for continuous reading, and his numbering of the arguments is kept.
