Saint Jerome (c. 347–420), priest, hermit, and Doctor of the Church, was the most learned of the Latin Fathers and the translator of the Bible into the Latin that the Western Church would use for a thousand years. He was also its most vivid letter-writer, and among the first to write the lives of the saints.

This volume gathers two parts of his work. The Select Letters carry the whole range of his mind and heart: the fiery call to the desert, the counsel of clergy and of consecrated virgins, the schooling of children, the study of Scripture, and the tender memorials he wrote for the holy women and men whom he had loved and lost. The Lives of the Hermits, of Paul, of Malchus, and of Hilarion, are his portraits of the desert saints, and among the first works of Christian biography.

This Sanctified Souls Press edition gives the letters in a selection of twelve, and the three Lives complete, in the public-domain English of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. Newly set on cream paper, for reading and keeping.
