A second original from our studio of the praying queen. St. Matilda of Germany wore a crown but lived like a sister of the poor, and answered the cruelty of her own sons with patience and prayer until they relented. She spent her widowhood building churches and feeding the hungry, and died with nothing left to give but her soul. Greatness, in her, looked like generosity.
