St. Martin de Porres, born of a Spanish father and a freed African mother, was scorned for his color and beloved for his charity — a Dominican lay brother who healed the sick of Lima, fed the poor by the hundreds, and embraced even the rats of the friary as God's creatures. Heaven made the despised man a wonder-worker, and the Church a saint.
