About this edition

Saint Basil the Great (c. 330–379), Bishop of Caesarea, was with the two Gregories one of the three great Cappadocians who secured the faith of Nicaea for the Church. This volume joins his two most enduring works.

On the Holy Spirit, written for his friend Amphilochius, is the treatise that established the divinity of the Holy Spirit and gave the Church much of its language of worship. The Hexaemeron, nine homilies preached upon the six days of creation, is his song of the created world, leading his hearers from the light and the firmament to the plants, the stars, the fishes, the birds, and the beasts, and everywhere back to the wisdom and goodness of their Maker.
