About this edition
Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347–407), Archbishop of Constantinople, was surnamed Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed, for the eloquence of his preaching. Of all the Greek Fathers he is the most beloved as an interpreter of Holy Scripture, and these homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew are the earliest complete commentary on that Gospel that survives entire, and among the greatest ever written.
He preached them at Antioch, about the year 390, taking up the Gospel passage by passage, and closing each homily with an exhortation to the moral life: to prayer and almsgiving, to the care of the poor, and to the remembrance of the world to come. In him doctrine and daily life are never divided.
This Sanctified Souls Press edition gathers the homilies complete, ninety in all, in the public-domain English of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. The single work is issued in three volumes on account of its length.
