About this edition
Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347–407), Archbishop of Constantinople, was surnamed Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed, for the eloquence of his preaching. Of all his works none was more prized in the ancient Church than these homilies on the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans, whom Chrysostom revered above every other teacher.
He preached them at Antioch, following Paul step by step through the whole argument of the Epistle: the guilt of Jew and Gentile alike, justification by faith, the reign of grace over sin, the life in the Spirit, the mystery of Israel, and the manifold duties of love. As always in Chrysostom, the loftiest doctrine descends at the close of each homily into the plain duties of the Christian life.
This Sanctified Souls Press edition gathers the homilies complete, thirty-two in all, in the public-domain English of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. The single work is issued in two volumes on account of its length.
