About this edition
Beside the great treatises stands the other Anselm: the monk at prayer. The Book of Meditations and Prayers is the devotional collection that has passed under his name since the Middle Ages, twenty-one meditations written to stir a cold heart to compunction, to sorrow, and to love.
Anselm divided them into numbered sections himself, so that the reader might break off wherever he wished and return without losing the thread. They are meant to be read slowly, a little at a time.
This Sanctified Souls Press edition gives all twenty-one complete and unabridged, in the 1872 English of M. R., on cream paper. A note in the front matter states plainly what scholarship has established: some of these pieces are genuinely Anselm's, and others are by his imitators or by earlier writers whom the manuscript tradition confused with him. The collection is offered as the tradition has kept it, not as certainly all his own.
