The Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael
The three archangels share a feast because they share a vocation: messengers and ministers of the Most High, sent into human history at the moments of greatest weight. They are not remote powers. They are near.
Michael — Who is like God?
The warrior who cast Lucifer from heaven, defender of the Church, guardian of the faithful at the hour of death. “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people” (Daniel 12:1). He stands at the threshold between life and death, and the Church has never stopped asking him to defend us in battle.
Gabriel — God is my strength
He explained the vision to Daniel, announced the Baptist to Zechariah in the Temple, and came to a girl in Nazareth with the most important message ever delivered: Hail, full of grace — three words that preceded the Incarnation.
Raphael — God heals
He walked the long road to Media beside Tobias, restored a father's sight, bound the demon, and only at the end revealed himself: “I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints” (Tobit 12:15). He had been companion and healer the whole journey without once announcing it.
Keeping Michaelmas
Pray the St. Michael prayer as a household. Light a candle. Set their images where the family will see them — Michael by the door, Raphael with the traveler, Gabriel wherever the word of God is received. Our Saint Michael canvas keeps the great defender on watch, and the rest of the heavenly company waits in our patron saint art.
Holy Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael — pray for us, guard us, heal us.
