In four books Gregory answers him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first and third books recount the miracles of the fathers of Italy; the second is given wholly to the life of Saint Benedict, the father of Western monasticism, and remains its earliest and chief source; the fourth turns to the soul, its immortality, and the state of the departed, and did much to shape the Church's teaching on prayer for the dead.
