Long before he became Archbishop of Constantinople he served as a presbyter at Antioch, and the two works gathered here both come from those years and from the season of Lent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cem\u003eInstructions to Catechumens\u003c\/em\u003e, given here complete, were addressed to those about to be baptized at Easter, unfolding the meaning of the laver of regeneration and the life it demands. The \u003cem\u003eHomilies on the Statues\u003c\/em\u003e were preached in Lent of 387, when the people of Antioch, rioting over taxes, had thrown down the statues of the Emperor Theodosius, and the whole city lay under the fear of destruction; through those weeks Chrysostom preached almost daily, until Bishop Flavian returned from the Emperor at Easter with a full pardon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf the twenty-one Homilies on the Statues, ten are given here: those that carry the story of the sedition from first to last, together with the most celebrated homilies of that season.
